This is done by mixing your clean signal through something called a voltage doubler, which increases your overall headroom and opens up the sound of the pedal. That way, you can get everything from a fragile boost to full-throttle blast tube distortion.
The Fat Sugar Drive is set to true bypass by default, but for the purists who want buffered bypass instead, just remove the base plate and press the internal buffer to toggle, close it and start playing.
